The Calgary and Region Travel and Activity Survey (CARTAS) will collect travel data from households in The City of Calgary and surrounding region cities, towns and counties. The goal is to help transportation planning organizations in The City and Region by using the information collected to update the Calgary Regional Transportation Model.
The Calgary Regional Transportation Model (RTM), is a peer reviewed transportation model of Calgary and the surrounding region that is well regarded across North America. It was developed using travel behaviour information collected in 2001 and it reproduces the unique travel patterns and behaviours of Calgary and Region residents. However, over time, travel behaviour starts to change and new information needs to be collected to refresh the inner workings of the RTM.
Results from CARTAS will help transportation planners understand the travel behaviour patterns in our region and allow them to update the RTM. In order to plan for the projects of tomorrow, we need to know how people move around, reasons they travel and who uses the transportation system today. With YOUR input, we will be better able to develop plans for transportation improvements that affect mobility, access to jobs, air quality, and quality of life in the region.
